Joe Burke (1939-2021), Galway – Republic of Irelandby Rob Howard |
Picture above: Joe Burke awarded, 1997 AIB Traditional Musician of the Year. Video: Recorded in Listowel, Ireland in 1995. President of Ireland Michael D Higgins leads tributes: “The news of the death of Joe Burke, distinguished and influential accordion player, will have saddened countless music lovers and fans of traditional Irish music, at home in Ireland and much further afield. His legacy, not only the great archive of his music but also the love for music that he kindled among countless young musicians, will continue to inspire.” - President Michael D Higgins. Born 1939 in Kilnadeema, County Galway, Joe Burke began playing the 2-row BC diatonic button accordion at the age of four. He won the All-Ireland Senior Accordion Championship at the Flead Cheoil in 1959 and again in 1960. Together with fiddler Aggie Whyte, he won the All-Ireland duet championship in 1962. He was also a superb flautist, and in the 1980s recorded a flute-harp duet album, ‘The Tailor’s Choice’, with the renowned harpist Máire Ní Chathasaigh. Joe Burke was RTÉ's Traditional Musician of the Year in 1970 and again 1997. In 1956 Joe Burke was a founding member of the Leitrim Ceili Band, and he first toured in the USA in 1961, living in New York from 1962 to 1965. During this time he formed a trio with fiddler Andy McGann and pianist Felix Dolan, with whom he recorded an LP, ‘A Tribute to Michael Coleman’, first released in 1966 on his own Shaskeen Label and would later record again with this trio, issuing ‘The Funny Reel’ LP on the Shanachie Label in 1979. Other musical collaborators over the years have included the great Belfast fiddler Sean Maguire, piper Michael Cooney, harpist Máire Ní Chathasaigh, fiddler Kevin Burke, pianist Charlie Lennon, and his wife Anne Conroy Burke, a guitarist and accordionist, whom he married in 1990. Joe Burke's first solo album, ‘Galway's Own’, was released in 1971 and he also toured extensively for the next two decades, including with groups sponsored by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. From 1988 to 1991 he lived in St.Louis, Missouri, and had a musical residency at John D. McGurk's pub as well as hosting radio programmes at two stations, one of them the ‘Ireland in America’ programme on KDHX. He represented Ireland in 1989 and 1992 at the International Accordion Festival in Montmagny, Quebec, Canada along with other accordion greats who included Cajun player Marc Savoy and jazz accordionist Art Van Damme. Joe Burke returned to live in Kilnadeema, Galway, in 1992, where he continued to teach and perform music. One of Ireland’s most admired accordionists and a legend of Irish traditional music, Joe Burke passed away on February 20th 2021 at the age of 81, and was widely mourned. |
Tributes paid to Joe Burke - Irelandby Harley Jones |
Video: Joe Burke's Farewell Tunes 2019, by Carl Hession who wrote: "I knew Joe for over 50 years, and traveled all over the country with him after we won The All Ireland Trio ( with Kathleen Collins on Fiddle ). After I moved to Cork to study music we lost contact, although I would come home for some of his concerts. Joe was an unbelievable musician, a thorough gentleman, and a very, very witty person who was tremendous company. Rest in peace, Joe." The Irish Examiner wrote: President of Ireland Michael Higgins leads tributes to the ‘distinguished and influential’ accordion player. “The news of the death of Joe Burke, distinguished and influential accordion player, will have saddened countless music lovers and fans of traditional Irish music, at home in Ireland and much further afield,” President Higgins said. “His legacy, not only the great archive of his music but also the love for music that he kindled among countless young musicians, will continue to inspire. Sabina and I send our condolences to Ann Conroy Burke, to his family and friends, and to all those whose hearts he touched.” Joe Burke, who was originally from Co Galway, was aged 81 years at the time of his death and had performed and recorded music for over 50 years, being named traditional musician of the year in 1970 and 1997. Kieran Hanrahan of RTECeiliHouse wrote on February 22: We’re greatly saddened to hear of the passing of Joe Burke. An iconic leader in Irish traditional music for many decades, he was a pioneering accordion player and a hugely entertaining and engaging person. Our condolences to Anne and the extended Burke family. Rest in peace Joe. Midwest Radio USA wrote 22 February: Tributes paid following the death of master accordion player from Galway Tributes have been paid following the death of one of Galway’s most revered traditional musicians Joe Burke. A native of Kilnadeema in East Galway, the 81-year-old was an incredible accordion player. He performed and recorded music for over five decades and was acclaimed by audiences worldwide for his style and technique. He was also proficient on the fiddle, tin whistle, flute and uilleann pipes, but was renowned for his mastery of the button accordion. Among his many awards was the AIB traditional musician of the year 1997. He was a founding member of the Leitrim Ceili Band in 1956 and toured the US in 1961. The Irish Traditional Music Archive paid tribute to Burke, saying he will be "forever remembered as one of the most influential accordion players of his time". |
World Accordion Day - What are you Doing? - Internationalby Diatonic News |
What are you doing for World Accordion Day to promote the accordion in your country? World Accordion day is on May 6th, which is the day the accordion was patented in 1829. World Accordion Day was started in 2009 by the CIA and has been very successful, generating a lot of positive publicity for the accordion. A key part of this event is the World Accordion Day website. Every association, group, orchestra, performer and teacher, is asked to actively support this event by encouraging national and local accordion activities to happen in their country on this day or the weekend either side of Accordion Day if that should be more convenient. Everyone can register their World Accordion Day activity on the website and send a report of their event after, for that website. No event is too big or too small. ALL accordion events celebrating World Accordion Day are welcome. This is a CIA promotion for the accordion in which every accordion enthusiast can participate and help bring our accordion world together as well as strongly promote the accordion. Due to new COVID-restrictions - let us know, if you instead of live-events plan some online activities - we are happy to report |

Melodeon Building Course with Emmanuel Pariselle postponed to August 2021 - ukby Diatonic News |
Melodeon Building Course (2.5 row) with Emmanuel Pariselle Friday 13 Aug 10am — Friday 27 Aug 4pm, 2021 Provisional Timetable: Week 1: Starts Fri 13 August, 10am. Ends Fri 20 August 10am (but with time in the morning for final fixes as necessary, you are welcome to stay for lunch). Week 2: Starts Fri 20 August, 2pm (arrive for lunch at 1pm). Ends Fri 27 August by 4pm. Existing Participants: Please email communications@halswaymanor.org.uk to confirm your preferred week. This is an extremely popular course with one of Europe’s finest instrument makers. Places are limited to 10, and our 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 courses sold out well in advance. Emmanuel will guide novice makers through the steps to build your own two and a half row melodeon. You will leave with your own professional standard instrument; whilst having a great sense of humour (and extremely good English) Emmanuel is also a demanding task master and will ensure that all instruments made are of the highest possible calibre. In addition to having a wonderful instrument, you’ll also benefit from the inestimable experience of working with a master craftsman and learn techniques for construction, maintenance and repair in the future. The box you build will reflect your individual preferences and there is flexibility in terms of key, inlay and accidental layout (see below). Case wood is French walnut and reeds are high quality Binci a mano hand made Italian reeds. Left hand chords have fundamentals and fifths – ie. no thirds – so work with major and minor keys. Please note that because of the time constraints on this course Emmanuel can only offer stepped and not Irish-style flat fingerboards. Who’s it For? No previous experience required, although manual dexterity and basic woodworking skills are an advantage. All tools are provided, but it is helpful if participants can bring a few basic hand tools eg screwdrivers, craft knife, pliers etc. Emmanuel is experienced in working with novice makers, and Chris Mash will also be on hand to offer practical support and to make sure all builds are kept on track. Tuning is done on site by industry expert Theo Gibb. For more: https://halswaymanor.org.uk/event/melodeon-building-course-2-5-row-with-emmanuel-pariselle-5/ |
