 We have already reported this - but we think, it is Worth to read again, especially during the "thoughtful month of the year"....Simple mental activity such as reading, writing, playing games and doing puzzles may protect brain health in old age, according to a new study being presented at a meeting in the USA this weekend. The study, presented at the 98th scientific assembly and annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) in Chicago, is the work of Konstantinos Arfanakis and colleagues, from Rush University Medical Center and Illinois Institute of Technology. "Reading the newspaper, writing letters, visiting a library, attending a play or playing games, such as chess or checkers, are all simple activities that can contribute to a healthier brain" says Arfanakis. Editor: What could be even better is playing the accordion. You have the extra mental and physical stimulus of playing a different keyboard with each hand (assuming your accordion has standard bass), co-ordinating the bellows and your fingers, so you are also stimulating both brain activity and brain to muscular activity as well, all while you enjoy your music. Therefore, NEVER stop PLAYING the accordion. Play in groups, orchestras or solo. Our older readers might not play like they did many years earlier, but the pleasure of music can still be fully enjoyed plus the benefits of musical practise are becoming recognised as medically ever more important to your brain health. |

 Video above: Published on Aug 23, 2013 Stiwoller DorffestBesonders spannend wurde es am 26. Oktober 2013 bei der Endrunde des 18. „Steirischen Harmonikawettbewerbes“ in der Stein-halle Lannach. Alle fünf Finalisten – Lukas GRUBER, Andreas KOINI, Max NEUBAUER, Martin SPITZER und Gregor VEIT – stellten ihr hervorragendes Können unter Beweis! Die fünf jungen Musiker zwischen zehn und vierzehn Jahren absolvierten jeweils ein Pflicht- und Kürstück und begeisterten damit hunderte ZuseherInnen vor Ort und ein noch viel größeres Publikum vor den TV-Schirmen. Die prominente Experten-Jury – Caroline Koller, Karl Lenz, Franz Posch und Sepp Strunz – hatte die sehr schwierige Aufgabe, die einzelnen Darbietungen zu bewerten und damit den „besten Nachwuchs-Harmo-nikaspieler der Steiermark“ zu küren. Gregor Veit überzeugte mit seinen Aufführungen – „Kugln muss er“ (Pflichtstück) und „Das erste Mal zu Dritt (Kür) – und gewann mit insgesamt 140 Punkten und damit 5 Punkten Vorsprung den ersten Preis, eine Stei-rische Harmonika von „Harmonikaerzeugung Schmidt“. Mit „Druck glei zua“ und „Harmonika Franzl“ holte Martin Spitzer aus Puchegg (Vorau) den zweiten Platz und damit eine Harmonika der Firma Strasser.  von Dr. Thomas EickhoffNie zuvor war die Spannweite der Volksmusik größer als heute – auch beim Harmonikatreffen im G’schössl Murtal Die Vielfalt an Musikerinnen und Musikern, an Instrumenten und Arrangements, an Stilrichtungen und Klangreichtum bietet der Volksmusik mittlerweile völlig neue Möglichkeiten. Die Grenzen des Genres sind offen und schaffen Spielräume für neue Interpretationen, egal ob Jazz, Blues, Folk, Rock, Klassik oder Weltmusik. In der „neuen Volksmusik“ gehen Tradition und Zeitgeist nahtlos ineinander über, sie beherrscht den lauten Tusch ebenso wie die leisen Zwischentöne, sie bespielt die großen Open-Air-Bühnen, die klassischen Konzertsäle und die Stammtische der örtlichen Wirtshäuser. Was ihre Protagonisten verbindet, so unterschiedlich ihre Musik sein mag: Die Virtuosität am Instrument, die spürbare Freude am Musizieren, ihre Eigenwilligkeit und Ehrlichkeit im Auftritt und ihre musikalischen Wurzeln in der alpenländischen Volksmusik. Premierenfestival unter der Intendanz von Herbert Pixner Diesen musikalischen Reichtum an einem Ort zusammenzubringen, war die Idee des in diesem Jahr erstmals veranstalteten Spielberg Musikfestivals. Drei Tage, vom 30. August bis zum 1. September, wurde in und um Spielberg, der rund 5.000 Einwohner zählenden Stadtgemeinde bei Knittelfeld in der Steiermark, aufgespielt. Hier spielten tanzbodenerfahrene Musikanten und die jungen Wilden auf Augenhöhe: von Volksmusikanten wie dem Leitn Toni aus Salzburg und Bernd Prettenthaler aus der Steiermark bis zu den jungen Vorarlbergern mit dem unaussprechlichen Namen holstuonarmusigbigbandclub. Von Erz-Musikanten wie Rudi Pietsch und den Tanzgeigern aus Wien bis zu den bayerischen Cowboys wie Django 3000 und der Ausseer Band IRISHsteirisch, die den musikalischen Grenzgang schon im Namen trägt. Die Intendanz für das Festival hat der Südtiroler Musiker Herbert Pixner übernommen. Er selbst trat mit seinem Herbert Pixner Projekt (oben) auf. Der Stil seiner Musik prägte auch den Charakter dieses Wochenendes: Nahe beim Publikum, aber weit jenseits davon, sich allein an möglichen Reichweiten zu orientieren. Das zeigen schon die ausgewählten Spielorte. Am Freitag wurde im kleineren Rahmen musiziert: Heidi Pixner und Manuel Randi traten etwa im Steirerschlössl in Zeltweg auf, Bernd Prettenthaler lud zum Treffen der Harmonikaspieler ins G’schlössl Murtal ein und da Blechhauf’n präsentierte sich auf der Terrasse der Bulls Lane am Red Bull Ring. Ein Fest an der legendären Rennstrecke von Spielberg: Am Samstag wurde schließlich die große Open-Air-Bühne am Red Bull Ring bespielt, die an diesem Tag eine Spielwiese für die neue Volksmusik wurde. Der Abschluss dieses gemeinsamen Musikfestivals von Projekt Spielberg und dem Kulturamt der Stadtgemeinde Spielberg ging am 1. September mit einem gemütlichen Frühschoppen im Kulturzentrum in Spielberg über die Bühne. Vielfalt beim Harmonikatreffen im G’schlössl Murtal Das Zusammentreffen von Tradition und Moderne bei jenem Festival für anspruchsvolle Kultur- und Musikgenießer wurde auch in Sachen Harmonika spürbar. Am Freitag des Festivalwochenendes trafen sich zahlreiche Harmonikaspieler, Musiker und Musikinteressierte in der Destination G’schlössl Murtal in Großlobming. Sänger und Musikanten aller Altersgruppen in harmonischer und gemütlicher Atmosphäre; spontanes Musizieren stand dabei im Vordergrund. Als Partner des Spielberg Musik-festivals war Harmonika Müller als einer der führenden Hersteller von qualitativ hochwertigen Harmonikas vor Ort und stellte seine neuesten Harmonikamodelle vor. Die neuen Massivholzharmonikas fanden beim Publikum großen Anklang. Eine Schauwerkstatt (unten) wurde vorbereitet, bei der die Besucher einen Einblick in die Produktion der Steirischen Harmonika miterleben konnten. Zur späteren Stunde trafen Musiker verschiedener Bands im G'schlössl mit Herbert Pixner zusammen und bescherten den Gästen gesellige Stunden bis zum Morgengrauen. Als Partner des Festivals ist es Harmonika Müller bereits jetzt eine Freude, die Fortsetzung 2014 ankündigen zu dürfen. Auch vonseiten des Intendanten Herbert Pixner soll es unbedingt eine Fortsetzung im nächsten Jahr geben. Aufgrund der erfolgreichen Premiere des Spielberg Musikfestivals steht das Datum für die zweite Auflage bereits fest: Fans traditioneller und moderner Volksmusik können sich den 28. bis 31. August 2014 schon einmal rot im Kalender anstreichen! Und was Pixner über seine Musik sagt, dürfte für das von ihm geleitete Festival auch 2014 gelten: „Volksmusik, Jazz, Blues, Weltmusik, ich weiß es auch nicht, wie man es nennen soll. Ich möchte einfach nur Musik machen.“ – Schwer einzuordnen vielleicht, aber mitreißend gut, darin sind sich die Kritiker bereits nach der Festivalpremiere 2013 einig!  Vom 1.-5. Jannuar 2014 ist die bereits 14. Fürstenecker Bordunale mit Diatonisches Akkordeon „auf Schwedisch" - Stilistische Bereicherungen für Fortgeschrittene mit Sigmar Gothe Anhand charakteristischer Stücke wird ein Einblick in die Rhythmik und den Stil traditioneller Tanzmusik aus Schweden und Norwegen gegeben. Die einzelnen Melodien werden wir mit unterschiedlicher Intensität bearbeiten, so dass einerseits ein vertieftes Verständnis und andererseits ein vielfältiger Überblick möglich werden. Skandinavische Melodien mit ihren langen Spannungsbögen und Tonbindungen, die aus der Geigenmusik abgeleitet sind, benötigen eine spezielle Phrasierung und Dynamik, die sich von verbreiteten Spielweisen des diatonischen Akkordeons unterscheidet. In diesem einzigartigen Kurs wird deshalb ein besonderes Augenmerk auf die typische Balgführung und Tongestaltung gelegt. Diese zu erlernen, ist in jedem Fall eine Bereicherung der persönlichen Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten, hilfreich für die Stilfindung und auch in anderen Repertoires sinnvoll einzusetzen. Sicheres Melodiespiel, eine gute Koordination von rechter und linker Hand sowie die Bereitschaft nach Gehör zu spielen werden vorausgesetzt. Wenn möglich, ein einfaches Aufnahmegerät mitbringen. Benötigt wird ein diatonisches Akkordeon in G/C ohne Gleichtöner und möglichst ohne Terz im Akkord. Letztere kann aber auch noch vor Ort und vorübergehend abgeklebt werden. Sigmar Gothe, Trossingen, arbeitet als Handzuginstrumentenmacher und spielt schwäbisch-allemannische (mit den "Stäffelsgeigern") und skandinavische Musik auf diatonischem und chromatischem Akkordeon.  Der etwas andere Advent mit der Meissnitzer BandIn einzigartiger Weise stimmt uns die Meissnitzer Band mit ihrer Konzertreihe „Advent im Gebirg“ auf die Adventszeit ein. Zum inzwischen vierten Mal besuchen die Mundart-Alpenrocker aus dem Salzburgerland gemeinsam mit dem Posaunenensemble Gsenger Schauplätze in ganz Österreich. Die Meissnitzer Band präsentiert dabei handgemachte Melodien verknüpft mit wunderschönen Volksweisen völlig UNPLUGGED – traditionell und doch modern. Das Posaunen Ensemble Gsenger, mit dem Frontmann der Meissnitzer Band Hans Gsenger und seinen drei Geschwistern Matthäus, Thomas und August Gsenger, bereichert das Konzertprogramm mit wunderschönen Bläser- und Gesangsstücken und nimmt einen sehr stimmigen und besonderen Teil des Konzertprogramms ein. Marianne Brandauer, die Schwester von Leadsängerin Christiane, gibt den Konzerten der Meissnitzer Band mit ihrem Hackbrett eine ganz besondere Facette. Die Konzertreihe „Advent im Gebirg“ ist bereits fix im Jahreskalender der Meissnitzer Band verankert und präsentiert die Band in einem völlig neuen Gesicht.  Sábado 28 Diciembre, 2013 Defensa 1575 San Telmo Buenos Aires Argentina Desde el comienzo de su carrera profesional, en el año 1991, Adriana Varela ha sido elegida para llevar nuestra música por diferentes lugares del mundo, representándonos en los mejores festivales internacionales como el de Nantes, París, Grec de Barcelona, de Teatro de Porto Alegre (Brasil), de Otoño de Madrid y el de Tango que se celebra en la ciudad de Granada (España); inclusive en el “Concert of the Ameritas” en donde cantó junto a grandes figuras como Paul Anka, Liza Minnelli, Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Arturo Sandoval, Daniela Mercury, Rita Marley y Kenny G, bajo la dirección de Lalo Schifrin. Ha grabado con grandes como el Polaco Goyeneche, Virgilio Expósito, Jaime Roos, Hugo Fatorusso, Leopoldo Federico, Néstor Marconini, Rodolfo Mederos y Gustavo Santaolalla. O de ser invitada por Joaquín Sabina para presentarse en “Las Ventas”, la plaza de toros en Madrid, ante miles de personas y también por Joan Manuel Serrat en el espectáculo que ofrece en el Estadio de Atlanta en Argentina. Adriana Varela no sólo realizó giras por todo el país sino que ha actuado en muchos países del exterior tales como Colombia, Uruguay, Brasil, Chile, México, Italia, Francia, Inglaterra, Grecia y Portugal. Además participó en decenas de discos homenajes donde compartió cartel con las grandes voces de la canción mundial como Chavela Vargas, Rosario Flores, Joan Manuel Serrat, Miguel Bossé, Joaquín Sabina, Pablo Milanés, Julieta Benegas, Pedro Guerra y Ana Belén. Se ha hecho acreedora de grandes galardones como los premios ACE a la música por dos años consecutivos (por los discos “Tangos” y “Maquillaje”) y el Premio Carlos Gardel 2002 a la Mejor Artista Femenina de Tango. Nuevamente en el 2007 recibió el Premio Gardel por su album “ENCAJE” a la Mejor Artista Femenina de Tango y una nominación como mejor producción. Este segundo Gardel otorgado confirma una vez más, el lugar que ocupa Adriana Varela en el ámbito de la música de Argentina. En el 2008, representó al país, actuando en la Expo Zaragoza junto con Mercedes Sosa, León Greco y Teresa Parodi. También participó en el Festival de Tango de Roma con dos presentaciones en el Parco della Música, viajando luego a Islas Canarias para cumplir con 3 compromisos artísticos. En el mes de febrero del 2009, se presentó en el Teatro Liceu de Barcelona, ante una sala colmada por 2.000 personas, siendo el primer artista argentino de música no lírica en ser invitado por la sala considerada una de las más importantes de Europa. | Le Forgeron (aka The Blacksmith) is, in many ways, a tribute to Ganey's great-grandfather, Andrew Doucet, who was not only a blacksmith, but an accordion player, as well. Andrew's recording of "Le two step du forgeron" lit a fire in Ganey that has burned uncontrollably every since he was 8 years old. It is what started Ganey on his musical journey. For him, the title has two meanings. This album starts with Ganey's version of the song and ends with his great-grandfather's.
