 Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (CCE) Cavan Musicians are holding a Christmas Eve Session in Cons Lounge, Butlersbridge, County Cavan, on Sunday, December 24th, 2.30pm - 5 pm, to celebrate the music of the late Joe Cooley RIP who died on December 20th, 1973. All are welcome to play or listen.Joe Cooley (1924–73), from County Galway, was a 2-row button accordion player who became one of the most influential of Irish accordionists of his generation. He was one of the founders of the Tulla Ceili Band in 1946 and played with the Tulla on their first broadcast for Radio Éireann in 1948. In 1954 Joe Cooley moved to the USA and lived in New York where he formed the Joe Cooley Ceili Band and the Joe Cooley Instrumental Group. He moved from New York to Chicago, and finally to San Francisco. In Chicago, Joe and his flute playing brother Seamus formed the Glenside Ceili Band. While in San Francisco, Cooley formed the Gráinneog Céilidh Band, which included accordionist Kevin Keegan, fiddlers Sue Draheim and Will Spires, Eric Thompson, and others. In America, he married Nancy McMahon from Killenana, County Clare. Joe returned to Ireland in the spring of 1973 after becoming ill with cancer. By this time he had become a legend, and his homecoming was like the return of a messiah. He toured the pubs of Clare and Galway with his friend banjo player Des Mulkere until shortly before his death in December 1973. His only commercial recordings were released in Ireland in 1975 as the LP (now on CD) ‘Cooley’. Recorded in 1973 in various pubs, this is lively Irish accordion music at its best. One of Cooley's enduring legacies is a reel named Joe Cooley's. Originally named The Tulla Reel, the tune became associated with Cooley and is now a standard in the Irish traditional music repertoire. |

| 18 Jan - 4 Feb 2018 - Celtic Connections 25th Glasgow’s annual folk, roots and world music festival, Celtic Connections celebrates Celtic music and its connections to cultures across the globe. From 19 January to 5 February 2017, some 2,100 musicians from around the world will descend on Glasgow and bring the city to life for 18 days of concerts, ceilidhs, talks, art exhibitions, workshops, and free events. Celtic Connections is programmed by Artistic Director (and founding member of Celtic supergroup Capercaillie) Donald Shaw, and features more than 300 events across multiple genres of music. The festival is renowned for its strong spirit of collaboration, bringing together one-off line-ups for very special one night only collaborative shows.  From the 12th - 14th of January 2018 the small town of Cygnet will again play host to the annual Cygnet Folk Festival. This year will be the 36th Cygnet Folk Festival, one of Australia’s most iconic folk music festivals. Very highly regarded by musicians and festival-goers from all over Australia and overseas, competition to come to Cygnet is at an all time high amongst performers, and last year we had a record number of applications! The Festival is a showcase of eclectic music genres featuring both local and international talent, dance, poetry, masterclasses, film, kids' entertainment, food, wine, art and local handicrafts all set in the breathtaking scenery of Tasmania's Huon Valley. Musicians and volunteers plan their annual holidays around coming to Cygnet in January each year and many come from interstate and overseas especially to be part of this wonderful event. The incredible talent of local and visiting musicians is celebrated over the January weekend and we are proud that so many amazing performers and festival goers take part in what the Festival has to offer each year. The Cygnet Folk Festival began in 1982 and is a not-for-profit community event organised by a volunteer management committee (Huon Folk Inc), a paid Festival Manager & Artistic Director and many dedicated people volunteering their time and expertise. | Der Wettbewerb findet Anfang Februar 3/4 2018 in Begunje 21, 4275 Begunje na Gorenjskem, Slowenien statt Im Rahmen der Musikschule Avsenik findet alljährlich der Internationale Akkordeonwettberb für den Avsenik Preis statt. Dieser internationale Wettbewerb bekommt von Jahr zu Jahr mehr an Bedeutung und ist zu einem der gröβten Wettbewerbe seiner Art in Slowenien und in Europa geworden. Beeindruckend ist, dass die Teilnehmerzahl unter den jüngeren Teilnehmern von Jahr zu Jahr wächst. Dies freut uns ganz besonders, denn so bleibt die Art der Volkmusik, welche die Brüder Slavko und Vilko Avsenik mit ihren Original Oberkrainern gründeten, immer lebendig und wird nie in Vergessenheit geraten. Die Musikschule Avsenik hat es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, dieses Erbe, auf das alle Slowenen stolz sein können, weiterzuführen. | The event, which lasts for five days, offers a variety of activities related to the Gaucho tradition. The first edition was held in 1972 and in that occasion the party that lasted for two nights, brought around 18 thousand people. The idea caught immediately and formed an organizing Committee composed of prominent neighbors. With the support of the diamantino Miguel Codaglio, renowned folklorist who had served in the Provincial direction of culture, complied a Billboard's artists of first line. To give you the framework right, and after the study of other places, decided to take advantage of a municipal land and allocate it to exclusive use of the festival: Martin Fierro field. The Organization, quality and brilliance of the show achieved that critics give wide dissemination to the festival and compared it with the Jesús Maria and Cosquín contests, fact that led one year later was expanded to three days. From then on, it became a social and cultural event with its own identity. | Chaque Fois at the Spice on Snow Festival Montpelier, VT - January 25-28 2018 Saturday Afternoon - Cajun Round Robin at American Legion Hall Chaque Fois! sets a festive atmosphere with Cajun music from southwest Louisiana. The name translates to "every time," and represents the fun and energy the group generates whenever they play together. The band is led by Alec Ellsworth (accordion, fiddle, vocals) and Katie Trautz (fiddle, vocals). Their twin fiddle style and singing weaves rhythms and harmonies together into lively dancing tunes. | An den Details für die erste Eröffnungsgala (24.2.) wird derzeit noch gefeilt, feststeht, dass am 25.2. Otto Lechner, von jeher in einem Naheverhältnis zum Akkordeonfestival (und umgekehrt!), am 25.2. im Vindobona die zweite Eröffnungsgala spielt, er trifft dabei auf den marokkanischen Sänger und Liederschreiber Kadero Rai. Damit zum Glück nicht genug, am 11.3. trifft er im Theater Akzent auf die finnische Formation Sväng (11.3.). Dieses Konzert läuft unter der Überschrift crazy moments, mit Saitenweise eine der beiden Programmschienen, die sich durch das Akkordeonfestival 2018 ziehen. Saitenweise erforscht das Zusammenspiel von Streichinstrumenten und Akkordeon, während crazy moments der Frage nachgeht „does humor belong in music?“ und vor Schrillem und genussvoll Überzeichnetem nicht zurückschreckt. Humor ist definitiv ein Bestandteil der großartigen Musik von Attwenger, die am 23.3. im Schutzhaus Zukunft die erste Abschlussgala des Festivals mit ihren Stimmen, Quetsche und Schlagzeug zelebrieren, gefolgt von The Russian Gentleman Club – Aliosha Biz, Roman Grinberg, Georgij Makazaria und Alexander Shevchenko – am 24.3. im Vindobona. Die dritte Abschlussgala am 25.3. im Metropol verspricht Großes, wenn Donauwellenreiter und Ricardo Tesi gemeinsam spielen, zusätzlichen Genuss verspricht das Trio Tesi – Geri – Mirabassi. Eine wahre Freude ist es dem Akkordeonfestival, dass Klaus Paier am 15.3. im Rahmen des Festivals seinen Geburtstag begeht, er spielt zu diesem Anlass mit seiner langjährigen kongenialen musikalischen Partnerin Ajsa Valcic im Porgy & Bess, womöglich wird sich das Duo Michael Riessler & Jean Luis Matinier auch mit einem Ständchen einstellen … Ein weiterer großer heimischer Akkordeonist, Walther Soyka, spielt am 3.3. mit Ernst Molden in der Formation Molden/Prozorov/Soyka/Stirner/Wirth, ebenfalls zu hören an diesem Abend im Theater Akzent sind Nachtcafe. | 26 January 2018 7:30PM For Scottish folk fans of a certain vintage and temperament; those of us whose conversion experiences included moshing in sweat-soaked black-box venues to the punk-folk vanguard of today's ongoing revival, there could hardly be more pleasing news than the Humpff Family Revival. Of all the music to emerge from that particular late-1980s/early-90s ferment, frontman John Coletta's songs still sound amazingly fresh - or maybe timeless; expertly based as they are on Celtic/bluegrass melodies and grooves, while running the gamut from manically hilarious to genuinely heart-tugging. Anyway, they're back! Dig out your Stetsons - and then hold onto them, as Coletta and cohorts old and new return to Celtic Connections. Since winning the 2016 BBC Radio 2 Horizon award, Sam Kelly has only gathered speed, appearing alongside Seth Lakeman, Heidi Talbot and other stellar performers. | Die Band „Die Niachtn“ besteht in dieser Formation seit knapp drei Jahren und die Wurzeln dieser musikalischen Vereinigung sind Bad Mitterndorf und die steirische/österreichische Volkskultur. Verschiedenste musikalische Einflüsse der Musiker haben sehr bald die musikalische Richtung der Band geprägt. Während Manuel Lichtenauer, an der „Rumpu?“ (Steirische Harmonika) aus dem Volksmusikalischen Sektor kam, sind die Wurzeln von Manuel Brunnsteiner, der neben vielen anderen Instrumenten hauptsächlich die Akustik-Gitarre spielt, der Metal und Rock der späten Neunziger.
