| Roland and Fatar sign V-Accordion outsourcing agreement. Roland Corporation Japan announced today (4th September 2014) that a new production and outsourcing agreement with Fatar srl has been finalized, and manufacturing for the V-Accordion® line will resume this August in Italy. Fatar is an Italian supplier of keyboards for digital pianos, synthesizers and organs, based in Recanati, Italy. The company was founded by Lino Ragni in 1956. By combining the efforts of Roland’s expert engineering teams in Japan and Fatar's renowned craftsmanship and quality standards, Roland remains dedicated to the ongoing development of the very specialised V-Accordions instruments including the FR18 Diatonic Accordion. As digital modeling continues to grow in popularity around the world, so too has the need for innovative V-Accordion models. | The PIF 2014 international competition for accordionists takes place in Castelfidardo, Ancona, Italy from September 18th to 21st. This year’s event includes a new category for World Music. The ‘Revelation Award Sete Sois Sete Luas’ is a new special World Music competition category of PIF established in collaboration with the Festival Sete Sois Sete Luas. The winner will not only have a scholarship and medal but also will make an artistic residence in Portugal, Ponte de Sor, becoming part of one of the orchestras participating in the Festival Sete Sois Sete Luas, performing with this orchestra in 2015. Competitors may participate from countries where the Festival Sete Sois Sete Luas is established, including Brazil, Cape Verde, Croatia, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, and Tunisia. Entrants will be soloists on the diatonic accordion, for instruments with a minimum of 21 buttons on the keyboard right (2 rows of buttons) and 8 basses in the lower left keyboard. The Sete Sois Sete Luas Festival was founded in 1993 by a group of young Italians active in the theater between Italy and Portugal and the great Portuguese writer José Saramago, who received, in 1998, the Nobel Prize for literature. The PIF of Castelfidardo is honored and proud to be partnering with the Festival SSSL and, to paraphrase the works of Saramago, is proposed as a “flying machine” for those accordionists operating in the traditional music and World Music who want to seize an important cultural and professional opportunities but, above all, an important opportunity to realize their dreams!! |

 A new competition, ‘Les Trophées de l’Accordéon’, takes place on November 15th, 10am to 12pm, at the studio Alhambra Colbert, Rochefort Rochefort, France. The jury members will be Eric Debègue, (Cristal Production), Michael Larchange (composer/musician), Philippe Krumm (Editor of the magazine ‘Accordéon et accordéonistes’) and Didier Ouvrard (former programmer of ‘La chance aux chansons’).6 candidates will be selected by the jury (3 junior – under 18 years, 3 senior) to perform in the evening concert at the Parc des Expos, with 2 candidates then chosen by public vote to receive junior and senior championship trophies. The winners will also each receive a day in the Crystal Records studio to record a CD, a half page article in ‘Accordéon et accordéonistes’, and participation in the TV programme ‘123 Musette’. This competition is organized as part of the event ‘Dansez au son de l’accordéon’ (‘Dance to the sounds of the accordion’) to be held the same day at the Parc des Expos La Rochelle. 11. Bandoneon Festival Krefeld - Germanyby Diatonic News |

  Das Bandoneon - ein Krefelder InstrumentDie Geburtsstunde des Bandoneons liegt in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts. „Seit dem Jahre 1845", so schreibt der Krefelder Instrumentenhändler Heinrich Band (1821-1860) selbst in einem teilweise erhaltenen Prospekt, habe er daran gearbeitet, das „Accordion" zu verbessern. Dem verbesserten Instrument „sei der Name Bandonion beigelegt worden." 1844 wirbt er erstmals in der Krefelder Tagespresse für „56tönige Accordions". Bei diesen Instrumenten muss es sich um Concertinas gehandelt haben, die Band aus Sachsen und sehr wahrscheinlich vom Erfinder der Concertinas, Carl Friedrich Uhlig aus Chemnitz, bezogen hat. Uhlig hatte die Concertina auf Basis des schon vorher existierenden Accordions entwickelt. Damit erklärt sich, dass Band zunächst diesen Namen für das Instrument benutzt Am 10.12.1850 ist in einer Zeitungsanzeige Heinrich Bands erstmals von einer „Erfindung und neuen Construction" die Rede, dies ein Hinweis auf Veränderungen, die Band an der Concertina vorgenommen hat. Diese beziehen sich sowohl auf den Tonumfang als auch auf eine andere Anordnung der Tastatur. Letztere wird später als „rheinische Lage" bezeichnet, in Abgrenzung zur „Chemnitzer -" und „Carlsfelder Lage" der Concertinas. In einer Anzeige vom 12.8.1855 wirbt Band erstmals selbst für Bandonions, eine Wortneuschöpfung, die mit Bands Familiennamen beginnt. Allerdings baut der Setzer der Tageszeitung zwei Fehler in den Begriff ein, und so steht da „Bandaninos" zu lesen. Durch Bands „Umbau" wurde aus der Concertina jedenfalls das Erfolgsinstrument Bandonion, das bis in die 30er Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts hinein in der Arbeiterschaft als „Feierabendinstrument" sehr beliebt war - um in der Funktion als „Klavier des kleinen Mannes" dann doch wieder vom Accordion verdrängt zu werden. Überlebt hat das Bandonion seinen Niedergang in Europa mit der veränderten Schreibweise Bandoneon, weil es sich in Südamerika zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts zum Hauptinstrument des Tangos entwickelt hat. Durch die Renaissance dieser südamerikanischen Musik in Europa - ausgelöst nicht zuletzt durch den Tango Nuevo des Astor Piazzolla - geriet das Bandoneon in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren auch auf seinem Ursprungskontinent wieder in den Blickpunkt. Das Kulturbüro hat 1985 zum ersten Mal ein Bandoneon-Festival veranstaltet, seit 1996 bietet es die Konzertreihe im zweijährigen Rhythmus an. 2014 folgt nun die elfte Auflage. September 2014, 20 Uhr, Kulturzentrum Fabrik Heeder, Studiobühne 1, Virchowstr. 130 Juanjo Mosalini & Vicente Bögeholz http://www.duo-boegeholz-mosalini.com/ Schon ein halbes Jahr nach der ersten Begegnung von Juanjo Mosalini und Vicente Bögeholz in Paris im Sommer 2000 wurde von der Presse das „nahtlose Zusammenspiel des einzigartigen" Duos gefeiert. 2006 erhielten die beiden Musiker den Deuteschen Weltmusikpreis. Ausgangspunkt ihres Repertoires bilden der klassische Tango und der „tango nuevo". Doch entspricht es der Vielseitigkeit der Musiker, dass sie für ihre Instrumente auch neue und andere Horizonte suchen. So schrieb zum Beispiel Dr. Eckhard Weber aus Berlin:"...Ensembles wie das Duo Bögeholz Mosalini verfolgen konsequent eine Erweiterung des Repertoires gerade für die beiden Instrumente, die das Herz des Tangos darstellen, das Bandoneon und die Gitarre..." Ihre Programme verdeutlichen den fließenden Übergang in die Ästhetik einer zugänglichen zeitgenössischen Kammermusik. In der Fabrik Heeder sind sie mit ihrem neuen Programm „Delta y Mar" zu hören. Mittwoch, 24. September 2014, 20 Uhr, Rittersaal der Burg Linn, Albert-Steeger-Str. 19a Flautango Schon bei seinem Debüt 2004 in Bremen fesselte das junge Quartett mit seiner entstaubten Version des Tango argentino. Bis Bandoneon und Violine die Flöte ablösten, prägte diese die Melodien des Tangos in Buenos Aires und Montevideo. Flautango belebt die Rolle der Flöte von damals im regen Dialog mit dem Bandoneon wieder: Efrain Oscher (Montevideo) an der Querflöte und Santiago Cimadevilla (Buenos Aires) am Bandoneon führen spielerisch-virtuos, dramatisch und ausdrucksstark durch die Palette der Emotionen des Tango. Zusätzlich getragen durch Gustavo Lanzon am Klavier und Balazs Szabo am Kontrabass zelebriert das Ensemble den Klang der großen Tangoorchester Argentiniens. Freitag, 26. September 2014, 20 Uhr, Kulturzentrum Fabrik Heeder, Studiobühne 2, Virchowstr. 130 Joaquín Alem Der argentinische Komponist und Bandoneonist Joaquín Alem, 1975 in Buenos Aires geboren, präsentiert solo sein Können. Seine Werke umfassen Musik für unterschiedlichste Besetzungen wie Streichquartette, Gitarren und Bläserquintett. Sie wurden immer wieder von großen Meistern der argentinischen und lateinamerikanischen Musik wie Egberto Gismonti gelobt. Sein musikalischer Mittelpunkt ist dabei immer das Bandoneon geblieben. In seinem Soloprogramm präsentiert Joaquín Alem eigene Stücke für Bandoneon solo, die er auf seiner zweiten CD veröffentlicht hat sowie Interpretationen von Werken Astor Piazzollas. Dabei wird auch eine Weltpremiere eine seiner neuesten Kompositionen zu hören sein. Montag, 29. September 2014, 19 Uhr, VHS-Haus, Von-der-Leyen-Platz 2 Klaus Gutjahr Gesprächskonzert - „Che Bandoneon" Klaus Gutjahr spielt seit seinem achten Lebensjahr Bandoneon. Als Solist begleitet er Liedermacher wie unter anderen Eva-Maria Hagen, Michael Z, Klaus Hoffmann, Erika Pluhar, Hannes Wader und Wolf Biermann. In seinen Soloprogrammen präsentiert er die musikalische Bandbreite des Bandoneons von Bach bis Piazzolla. Weil es zu Beginn seiner Studienzeit weltweit keine Herstellung von Bandoneons gab, beschäftigte sich Klaus Gutjahr neben seiner musikalischen Tätigkeit mit dem Neubau dieses Instrumentes. Mit dem Anspruch eines professionellen Musikers widmet er sich dieser Arbeit seit mehr als 40 Jahren. In den Zwischenjahren begibt sich das Festival in die Orte im Starnberger Fünfseenland.  Vom 3. bis 4. Oktober 2014 findet in der Steririschen Marktgemeinde Neumarkt erstmalig dieser Wettbewerb statt. Anmeldeschluss ist der 31. August 2014 ! Der Name Alpe Adria Harmonikabewerb wurde gewählt, da hauptsächlich KandidatenInnen aus den Ländern Österreich, Slowenien, Kroatien, Italien und Südtirol bei diesem wohl einmaligen Event vertreten sind. Von der hochkarätigen Jury Gottfried Hubmann, BA (Juryvorsitz, A), Joze Burnik (SLO), Loui Herinx (NL), Primoz Zvir (SLO), Eduard Huber (Südtirol), Prof. Zoran Lupinc (I) und Michael Pirolt ( A ) wird bei der Preisverleihung ein Jurybrief ausgehändigt. Jede(r) KandidatIn erhält eine Medaille. Für die ersten drei Preise je Alterskategorie gibt es wertvolle Pokale, wobei der erste Preis dem Namen einer verdienstvollen Person in der Harmonika-Szene gewidmet ist. Am 3.Oktober werden die Gäste von den Kulmer Schuh-plattlern und einem Konzert eines Harmonikaorchesters unter der Leitung von Herrn Primoz Zvir aus Slowenien unterhalten. Von 18 Uhr bis 22 Uhr gibt es Tanz und Unterhaltung mit der grandiosen Gruppe „ Oberkrainer Skorpioni“. Samstag, der 4. Oktober steht dann ganz im Zeichen des „Alpe Adria Harmonikabewerbes“, bei dem die TeilnehmerInnen ihr Können unter Beweis stellen und den Besuchern wohl Einmaliges an Musikalität und Virtuosität bieten werden. | Contributed by Jill Lloyd, Media Coordinator: Themed “Squeeze Some Spice Into Your Life” the 6th annual Accordion Festival AKA "The Big Squeeze" on Sunday, Sept. 28 at the Orange County Market Place in Costa Mesa will bring together zesty music, hot and spicy foods and tasty seasonal brews. Accordion based bands and soloists playing a variety of music genres will highlight the Big Squeeze component, which runs from 10:AM to 4:PM and show off the diversity of the squeezebox. Featured bands on the main stage include Doug Legacy and the Zydeco Party Band at 2:45 PM withhot and spicy zydeco, Cajun, blues and "Chuck Berry style"rock 'n roll. Returning for the second year is Porterhouse Bob and Down to the Bone featuring The Brotherhood Horns and L.A. Accordion Diva “Gee “Rabe on accordion at 12:45 p.m. They are an eight piece New Orleans style funk and rhythm and blues band which includes a four piece horn section known as The Brotherhood Horns with players from Ray Charles, Brian Setzer, Elton John and many others. The Ploughboys, the house band at the Scottish Pub Tam O'Shanter Inn in Los Angeles, will perform lively Scottish and Irish songs at 11:30 a.m. The Fred Mlakar Band will churn out Slovenian American music to kick off the main stage shows at 10:30 a.m. Free zydeco dance lessons will be offered at 12:20 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. by Ted Sherrod. On another stage from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. solo accordionists will offer a cultural mix of music including Balkan Folk Music by Dromia, Italian and Piazzolla selections by Lou Fanucchi, Hungarian and other international melodies by Peter Geburth. Jim Gilman’s Oktoberfest band will bring in traditional German and Polka favorites. The public can bring their accordions to take part in free lessons for beginners and intermediate players at 11:30 a.m. by “Gee Rabe” as well as free appraisals from noon to 3 p.m. and an open jam at 3:30 p.m. Free accordion storage will be available. While soaking in the hot entertainment, beer connoisseurs can take in the Samuel Adams Octoberfest Experience which runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and offers tastings of its seasonal brews and other specialty beers. Beer selections include Samuel Adams Fall Seasonal Octoberfest Beer and other specialty beers including Samuel Adams Boston Lager, Samuel Adams Rebel IPA, Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat, Angry Orchard Cider, Porch Rocker, Belgian Session and Fat Jack. For the Beer Experience there is a $25 ticket available in advance and offers a $19 savings through Sept. 26 . This includes a free admission and preferred parking to the Big Squeeze with all of the entertainment and the OC Market Place, along with FOUR 12 oz. beers, a bratwurst and giant pretzel. Sign-ups will begin the morning of the event at the Samuel Adams Octoberfest tent, starting at 10 a.m. for both the men's and women's competition. The main heat is at 2 p.m. on the Main Stage. Gourmet food trucks will be serving up special spicy and Oktoberfest menu items in addition to their regular bill of fare.  Tim collins - A former Fulbright Music Scholar at New York University (2007), Tim Collins holds an honours Science teaching degree from Thomond College (1990) and a first class honours MA in Performance from the University of Limerick (2003). He was conferred with his PhD from the National University of Ireland, Galway in 2013. He is currently a Research Associate with the Centre for Irish Studies at NUIG. His research interests include ethnomusicology, Irish Music Studies, early 20th century Irish History, Cultural Geography, Memory Studies and Diaspora Studies with a particular focus on 19th and 20th century Irish emigration. Tim Collins is also an internationally acclaimed musician who’s namehas been associated with the pedagogical and performative development of the Irish concertina for close on thirty years. He has appeared at festivals throughout Ireland, Europe, North America and Asia, both as a solo performer and with artists such as the Kilfenora Céilí Band, Mick Moloney and The Green Fields of America, Liam Lawton and his Celtic Orchestra among others. A regular performer on Irish Radio and TV he has also appeared on America’s PBS along with John Doyle, Liz Carroll, Eileen Workshops/Master Classes 2014 Saturday 20th September Classes will be restricted and pre-booking is advisable.  Edel Fox is a concertina player from Miltown Malbay Co. Clare. She began playing at the age of 7 and was fortunate to be brought up in an area and environment where traditional music was in abundance. Edel learnt much of her music from expert concertina players such Noel Hill, Dymphna O’Sullivan, and Tim Collins.In 2004, Edel was awarded the TG4 Gradam Ceoltóir Óg na Bliana (Young Musician of the Year) and since then she has travelled extensively as both a teacher and performer of the tradition appearing at some of the biggest national and international music festivals throughout the US, Canada, Europe and Asia. Her popular 2010 solo recording “Chords and Beryls” has gone on to receive critical acclaim. She has appeared on numerous television and radio programmes on RTE, TG4, BBC and has also presented the popular TG4 music programme Geantraí (2010) and her self-produced and directed music programme Croch Suas É (2013). Edel has a B.A. in Irish Music and Dance as well as a M.A. in Music Therapy. A fluent Irish speaker, she recently graduated with a H.Dip in Léiriú Téilifise (Television Production) from Waterford I.T.  Friday, September 19th at 9.30pmMary MacNamara’s CD Launch “Note for Note” Minogues The launch of Mary MacNamara’s album “Note for Note” promises to be a very interesting event. This is the third solo CD from this East Clare musician. This time it truly is solo – no guests or accompaniment. Mary states that this has been a more difficult undertaking than any of her previous musical recordings. The reasons for that may be the same factors that make this a unique production. The musician’s emotional soul is exposed for the entire world to see in the forum where there is no other musician to balance against and particularly in producer Peadar Ó Riada’s studio where nothing was added or taken away during recording. We can hear the influence of Mary’s childhood heroes such as P Joe Hayes and Martin Rochford and some tunes learned from the playing of more recent musical alliances. There is a lot more too!
