What Are You Doing For World Accordion Day? - International

by Harley Jones
World Accordion Day logoThe Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) is pleased to welcome you to World Accordion Day. Planned is a live WAD video broadcast on May 6th hosted by Kevin Friedrich & Grayson Masefield of 2 hours with a focus on childhood accordion education. The World Accordion Day 2021 website, May 6th, will feature accordion in many countries.

Brazil and Portugal will collaborate to celebrate Astor Piazzolla's centenary by holding 15 performances by accordionists around the world.

The Quitanda Musical Booking Agency, in partnership with the Oswaldinho do Acordeon Institute and Mito Algarvio - Association of Accordionists of the Algarve (Portugal), brought together some famous accordionists to celebrate this very special date.

Oswaldinho do Acordeon, Hermeto Pascoal, Renato Borghetti and Luizinho Calixto represent Brazil, along with a Portuguese team including João Barradas, Inês Vaz, Nelson Conceição and João Frade. The event also includes the virtuoso Mirco Patarini in Italy and other international talents such as Laimonas Salijus (Lithuania), Petar Maric (Serbia) and Irina Serotyuk (Ukraine).

There will be more than 15 performances on May 6th, divided into four different times throughout the day, broadcast on Rythmica Web TV. Look for the video link here before 6th May. Broadcast: www.rythmicawebtv.com

There is a major event at the World of Accordions Museum in the USA and events from many other countries. View all these at: World Accordion Day (WAD)

For groups and individuals around the world: What are you doing for World Accordion Day to promote the accordion in your country? World Accordion day is on May 6th, which is the day the accordion was patented in 1829.

World Accordion Day was started in 2009 by the CIA and has been very successful, generating a lot of positive publicity for the accordion. A key part of this event is the World Accordion Day website to register your event and with background information for the media.

Every association, group, orchestra, performer and teacher that can, is asked to actively support this event by encouraging national and local accordion activities to happen in their country on this day or the weekend either side of Accordion Day if that should be more convenient.

Everyone can register their World Accordion Day activity on the website and send a report of their event after, for that website.

No event is too big or too small. ALL accordion events celebrating World Accordion Day are welcome. This is a CIA promotion for the accordion in which every accordion enthusiast can participate and help bring our accordion world together as well as strongly promote the accordion.

Swamp in the City: A Cajun & Creole Music Festival May 15-16 in NYC - USA

by Diatonic News
Swamp in the City: A Cajun & Creole Music Festival May 15-16 in NYC
Swamp in the City is a Cajun & Creole music festival that celebrates the vibrant musical, cultural and culinary heritage unique to Southwest Louisiana. Save the date for this year's festival on New York's Governors Island: May 15-16, 2021 at 6:30 PM.

Enjoy an outdoor edition of Swamp in the City: A Cajun & Creole Music Festival on Governors Island, May 15-16, 2021. Set on a 172 acre island in the heart of New York Harbor, the weekend-long open air festival will feature world class Cajun & Creole bands, jam sessions, picnic concerts, pod partner dancing and ample breathing room on New York City's picturesque island.

The talented line-up includes: Jesse Lége, Cedric Watson, Joel Savoy, Joe Hall, Kelli Jones, Wilson Savoy, Jourdan Thibodeaux, Chas Justus, Jo Vidrine, Rose & the Bros, Bayou Brew... and maybe more!

While this year's festival is free and open to the public, you are kindly asked to make a donation along with your RSVP to help offset the costs of hosting this event (suggested $45-100 per person). Your donations support in bringing back live music of the highest quality and being able to do so in the future. A complete festival schedule and event map will be emailed to everyone who RSVP's on/around the first week of May.

Swamp in the City shares: Yes! Bring your instruments! We are planning to host a jam each day and, if enough of you let us know you're interested, we'll offer a few group lessons in playing Cajun & Creole music. We'll be setting up a Swamp in the City HQ tent on the island where registrants can also stash their instruments safely when not in use. While we feel that communal experiences are needed now more than ever, we are sensitive to ongoing safety concerns and the health and well-being of our community. Here are some steps that Swamp in the City is taking to ensure our festival happens safely:

- Hosting the festival in the most spacious outdoor venue NYC has to offer
- Adhering to all current NYC Health & Safety guidelines
- Programming two stages that are a short walk from each other to avoid a confluence of people in any specific area.
- Requiring all performers and attendees to wear masks when unable to keep a minimum of 6 feet of distance from others
- Designating areas for pod dancing and no-dance zones for people interested in listening away from dancers.
- Providing hand sanitizing stations near both stages.
- Encouraging attendees to identify their preferences re: dancing/distancing visibly so that we can support each other in enjoying the festival in the way that works best for each of us right now
- Survey results indicate that most attendees and artists will be fully vaccinated by May.

Here are some things that Governors Island is doing to help keep visitors safe:
- Ticket reservations are required to manage capacity and ensure social distancing on ferries. Visitors must reserve timed tickets in advance and depart on their selected return ferry.
- Visitors are required to wear face coverings while queuing, boarding, riding, and disembarking Governors Island ferries, and on the Island whenever social distancing is not possible.
- Visitors must maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet between groups.
- Increased cleaning procedures and schedules are in place for all restrooms, aboard ferries, and in high-touch, high-traffic areas across the Island.
- Enhanced health and safety protocols are in place for all food and drink vending locations.
- Hand sanitizer and hand washing stations are located throughout the Island.
Swamp in the City is open to other suggestions around how to best ensure the safety of our community. We respect that for some members of our community the best choice will be to wait until next year to join us. If you're staying home this year, please donate to support us in bringing back live music and being able to continue to do so in the future.

SEMINARIO LA MUSICA POPOLARE E LA MUSICA ESATTA - Italia

by Diatonic News
19 - 21 MAGGIO

TEJANO CONJUNTO FESTIVAL 2021 - USA
For all visitors that are eager to dance live to the best conjunto music in Texas and want to know the plans for TCF this year. Although the pandemic severity is lessening and some states are opening back for business 100%, the organizers still do not feel it is safe to have a full-fledged festival and will hold a one-day, mini-festival outdoors on Saturday May 22 in a location yet to be announced in San Antonio, with very limited audience but a LIVE STREAM available for purchase. 7:00 pm to 12:00 am. Ticket information for live stream coming soon.
As Latinos have been a population disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the organizers do not want to put any of their people at risk, but want everyone to continue to be safe and will prepare instead for the 40th anniversary next year! They hope all their fans will appreciate understanding and accepting the acutual situation, hoping to be together again soon.

Cancelled: Tag der Harmonika 2021 - Austria

by Werner Weibert
The HVO - Harmonikaverband Österreichs (Accordion Association of Austria), organisers of the Tag der Harmonika 2021 competition (Day of the Accordion), regret to announce that the event which was due to be held in Perg, Austria from 3rd to 6th June 2021 is cancelled due to Covid-19.

They sincerely hope that they may be able to run the event later in the year, however this depends on the ever changing virus situation in the future.

Postponed to 2022 / The Gator by the Bay Festival - USA

by Diatonic News
Gator by the Bay Festival 2022
The Organizers write:
Dear Gator Fans, Friends, and Supporters-

What’s happening with Gator By The Bay 2021?
Unfortunately, it is postponed until 2022.

We have been enthusiastically working since last year on the 20th anniversary edition of your Gator By The Bay Festival which was to take place in May, 2021. Up until this week, we had been optimistic about producing the May festival as planned. Multiple unknowns related to the COVID pandemic unfortunately have made planning exceedingly difficult. Although disappointing, it is clear to us that canceling the 2021 festival is the right decision.

The festival production requires permits and licenses issued by local and county authorities. To date, we have no assurance that those permits will be available. We seriously considered the possibility of postponing the festival into the summer months but realized that even that time frame remains unclear. Rather than making plans on yet another uncertain date in 2021, we concluded that setting our sights and confidently directing our efforts to the May 5-8, 2022, Mother’s Day weekend in San Diego, is a better use of our energy and resources.

All of us find great joy from the fun and connections that the festival generates, and we are optimistic that we will be able to safely share and enjoy live music and the festival experience again sometime soon. Currently, great progress is being made to neutralize the virus threat, and we realistically anticipate 2022 being a lot more normal than either last year was or this year might be.

We are forever grateful to our ticket holders for your patience and understanding during these unpredictable times. Your continued support allows us to be optimistic about the future and able to move boldly forward to produce a spectacular 2022 festival.

We ask those of you who have tickets carried over from 2020 to share our 2022 vision by carrying them over again to 2022. If your situation has changed and this presents a financial difficulty, contact us at process@gatorbythebay.com. You can request a refund through this link. You can If you have made hotel reservations, please remember to cancel them, but look for 2022 hotel information announcements very soon.

Fred Ziwich - Button Box Karaoke - Recording & Digital Book

by Harley Jones
Fred ZiwichIrish Songs, Fred's Button Box Book, and More!

Fred Ziwich book and recording called "Button Box Karaoke" is an excellent resource for Diatonic Button Accordion students. There is traditional music notation, as well as nomenclature/ diagrams that correspond to Steirische style - Slovenian and Austrian Button Boxes for the book which is available as a download.

The accompanying recordings feature Fred performing all of the band parts on Drums, horns, keyboards, and button box. Available as mp3 downloads or a CD, the recordings are presented with the full band and then presented without the lead button box for karaoke play-along. This is a great educational tool, as well as fun for listening as well.

The joint 2021 festival will be held on 28th - 31st May 2021.

They are thrilled to announce that this year Chippenham and Chester Folk Festival are to combine for one amazing online Folk Festival experience in May.
On hearing the news John Kirkpatrick, the patron of Chippenham Folk Festival said:
“This is such an exciting idea - two great festivals pooling their resources to make one mighty weekend that can be enjoyed from anywhere in the world. In these strange times, it’s so impressive to see how consistently resourceful and inventive the folk community can be to keep the music alive and kicking”

And BBC Radio 2 Folk Show Presenter, and long-time supporter of Chester, Mark Radcliffe commented:
“In these most trying of times for live music: I think my old friends Chester and new friends at Chippenham may be ahead of the curve here. What a brilliant idea to pool the resources of two seasoned and respected events which normally happen simultaneously. I think this will bring a harmonious and heart-warming ‘Two Way Family Favourites’ flavour to the joint event. All hail Chestenham. I’m sure may others will follow your lead”.
We are working on a cracking line up of artists, callers and dancers from around the world.

Wayne ToupsVideo: King of the Road. Watch Wayne Toups & ZydeCajun perform "Tupelo Honey" at the Texas Rice Festival 2012 in Winnie, Texas!

Wayne Toups picked up the accordion at age 13 and hasn’t put it down since. He mixes Cajun sounds with the rhythms of zydeco, adding elements of soul music and Southern rock. He calls the revved-up result “ZyDecajun,” and his electrifying group, “a Cajun fusion band with a rock ‘n’ roll attitude.”
