 Dwight LambFourth-generation old-time fiddler and button accordion player Dwight “Red” Lamb is a master of Danish fiddle and accordion traditions, as well as Missouri Valley old-time fiddling. With more than 60 years’ commitment to collection, recording, preservation, and teaching, Lamb has mentored generations of regional and international musicians and is the 2017 recipient of the Bess Lomax Hawes National Heritage Fellowship.Lamb, known for his unusual left-handed fiddle style, was born in Moorhead, Iowa, in 1934. Alongside his Danish grandfather, Chris Jerup, Lamb played his first dance on the single row ten-button accordion. Jerup, also a fiddler and button accordion player, learned from his own father in Vendsyssel, Denmark. In 1961, Lamb—also a protégé of Missouri Valley fiddler Uncle Bob Walters, a radio fiddler from Tekamah, Nebraska—entered his first fiddle contest. Lamb has gone on to win numerous awards from fiddle and accordion contests, and, as a nationally certified judge, he has adjudicated contests in nine states. Lamb is not simply a musician and teacher. Without his efforts, the majority of available recordings of Missouri Valley musicians such as Bob Walters, Casey Jones, Cyril Stinnet, and Lena Hughes, as well as their unique styles, repertoires, and stories, might have been lost. His broad repertoire reflects the confluence of his heritage and his region, as the Missouri Valley fiddle tradition reflects a unique melding of Anglo-Irish traditions with the Scandinavian, Eastern European, German, and Canadian influences of the upper Midwest. In recognition of Lamb’s preservation of this complex regional style, the state of Missouri invited him to perform at the 1991 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. He was featured again at the 1996 Smithsonian Folklife Festival (which helped to mark the Iowa Sesquicentennial) as well as for the 1996 Iowa Folklife Festival. Lamb received the Iowa Arts Council’s 1998 Folklife Award and has received Traditional Arts Apprenticeship grants in Iowa, South Dakota, and Missouri. Lamb has made numerous recordings, including for Rounder Records; is featured on the 1996 Iowa State Fare CD (Smithsonian Folkways); and has appeared on Iowa Public Television. He has also performed in San Antonio at the 2011 International Accordion Festival and at the 2011 Tønder Festival in Denmark. Lamb’s international reputation came about late in life when his inclusion of old Danish buttonbox tunes on the album Joseph Won A Coated Fiddle (Rounder, 1999) attracted interest in Denmark, where the music of his forebears had vanished. In 2010-11, Danish accordionist Mette Kathrine Jensen and fiddler Kristin Bugge invited Lamb to Denmark, where he played to sold-out halls. | The 30th Shetland Accordion and Fiddle Festival dates are THURSDAY 5 OCTOBER - MONDAY 9 OCTOBER 2017 The annual festival mainly concentrates on music provided by Shetland's two most popular instruments - the accordion and the fiddle. The festival takes place over a hectic four-day period in early October. As with Shetland Folk Festival, musicians from all over the world perform at the event, although emphasis is on Scottish Dance music. Local musicians feature prominently in the event line-up. Tunes are swapped and musicians make new friends in the sessions that are an important part of the festival; younger musicians find them especially valuable in broadening their experience. Adopting the tried and trusted format of widespread community involvement, the event incorporates most areas of Shetland. It culminates in one of the biggest traditional dances to take place anywhere in the UK. Around a dozen different dance bands take it in turn to perform to 1,500 enthusiasts in the local sports centre in what amounts to a highly enjoyable "traditional rave". | “Le Grand Soufflet” is an international accordion festival. It has been taking place every year in October in the city of Rennes and other different cities of the Ille-et-Vilaine department (French Brittany) since 1996. It is now one of the most important festival dedicated to the instrument. About 12 000 people attend to the festival each year, in 30 to 40 venues. The purpose of the festival is to show the modernity and the diversity of accordion (and Harmonica, so we already invited some of the most important artists from all over the world (Brasil, Canada, Argentina, Madagascar, Finland, etc…) but also young promising artists from France and other countries.  Thank you to Dan Grauman for the above videos.The Reading Liederkranz hosted the second annual Button Box Festival on September 2-3, 2017, which was well received by an appreciative crowd. The festival, organized by Cody McSherry and his parents along with the Reading Liederkranz, brought together five of the best button box players from across the United States along with several very talented side musicians. The button box players were Frank Vidergar, Jr. from Colorado, William Hayes from Virginia, Ron Pivovar from Pennsylvania, David Bey from North Carolina, and Cody McSherry from Pennsylvania. Hurricane remnants forced the festival indoors, but did not dampen the festive mood of the musicians and audience. The button box players rotated through half hour sets accompanied by side musicians on bass, drums, keyboard, and even banjo-ukulele. Authentic German food was available for purchase throughout the event, and dancers enjoyed the opportunity to dance to live German and Slovenian polkas and waltzes. The 2018 Button Box Festival is already in the works, so mark your calendars for Labor Day weekend next year. | 25. Alpen Grand Prix der Unterhaltungsmusik findet in Meran am 13. Oktober 2017 im Kursaal ab 20 Uhr statt. Der Alpen Grand Prix ist ein Musikwettbewerb der „Schlager“ und „Volksmusik“ der seit 1993 jährlich in Südtirol stattfindet. Bis 1996 nahmen ausschließlich nur Interpreten aus Südtirol teil. Seit 1997 ist der Alpen Grand Prix International und Teilnehmer aus Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz, Italien, Slowenien, Kroatien, Frankreich, Niederlande, Polen, Ungarn und USA haben daran bereits teilgenommen. Die Gesangssprache ist Deutsch. Der Alpen Grand Prix ein Internationaler Musikwettbewerb für Interpreten, Komponisten, Texter, Produzenten und Verlage. In den letzten Jahren gab es beim Alpen Grand Prix getrennte Wertungen für die Bereiche Schlager und Volksmusik. Der Alpen Grand Prix zählt zu einem der bedeutendsten Musikwettbewerb in der Sparte Schlager und Volksmusik. Dass dieser Internationale Musikwettbewerb an Beliebtheit und Wichtigkeit immer mehr zunimmt, bestätigen die vielen Bewerbungen von bekannten Komponisten, Textern und Produzenten. | For the 8th time since 1989, the World Harmonica Festival 2017 will present the most highly regarded harmonica competitions in the world. The competitions are for different types of harmonica instruments and are sometimes subdivided into different stylistic categories such as classical, jazz or blues. They offer amateur players the unique opportunity to measure their instrumental skills against other players in a fair contest. Clearly defined criteria help the jury of experts (generally professional harmonica players) to adjudicate the competitors' performances correctly and analytically. In previous years the competitions have witnessed some remarkable musical achievements which only serve to underline the fascination of the harmonica. As is usual in such contests, all contestants receive certificates signed by the jury leader and the president of the festival. Attractive prizes await the winners of the individual categories.  Sharon Shannon’s latest CD, ‘Sacred Earth’, is an eclectic recording of arrangements of traditional Irish tunes and Irish-influenced compositions, mixed in with styles from around the world, including Blues, North and West African music and reggae. On this recording she works with various other musicians such as Finbarr Furey, six Shetland fiddlers, and kora player Seckou Keita.Sharon Shannon, from County Clare but now living in Galway, plays the diatonic 2 row button accordion, melodeon, fiddle, and tin whistle. Originally a competitive show jumper, she switched to playing music professionally in the mid-1980s, and has since enjoyed a very successful international career. She was briefly a member of The Waterboys, but plays mainly as a soloist with her own backing musicians. Sharon Shannon is especially popular with younger audiences, and is well-known as an innovator who incorporates other styles such as French-Canadian, Portuguese, Cajun, and Reggae into Irish traditional music.
